World Series Game 5. Hi.

They are suspending the game and will pick it up in the bottom of the sixth. When, who knows, because the weather is also supposed to be poor tomorrow. "That run with two outs saves the Tampa Bay Rays from the end of the World Series," says McJoe, because the game is tied.

good call on the delay, David <--- top SIXTH
TIED 2-2. "Upton almost hydroplaned right past the plate."

"Continue to check the radar" is not a phrase you often hear in baseball. "Hydroplanes into second base" also unusual.

Two out, nobody on, and it's Cole vs. BJ. Two-out hit.

bottom FIFTH
2-1 Phillies. Lucy, momentarily distracted, is trying to remember all the cats' names in Top Cat. (We have a house full of Hanna Barbera fans. As I said, we're the Griswolds.) Thus far we have: TC, Choo Choo, Benny the Ball, and Fancy.

McTim: "The Rays are squeezed and pinched at the corners."
"It's very wet."

Scott Kazmir had the most walks (6) in a World Series game since Livan Hernandez in 1997.

Head groundskeeper says the field is good to go but wind chill will be into the thirties.
Field: good. Fans: brrrrr.

top FIFTH
That was BEAUTIFUL! Brilliantly played by Utley.

"FIGHT THE WIND"

Flash is right. More hand talk.

Mrs. Gorton's fisherman is sitting behind home plate.

dibs: must have first card published of Evan Longoria with ear flaps down! It is better to look good than to feel good.

bottom FOURTH
Four walks handed out by Kazmir.

McCreevy is repeatedly listing names of pitches. Joe Buck sounds bored?

dayf, we so agree about not getting to watch baseball for the next five months.

It's raining and 45 degrees in Philadelphia. Almost as nice as the night of the rain delay.

Cole Hamels OUCH!!! He is looking at and wiggling his fingers. Hoo.

Card from Fielder's Choice. For some reason, I picture Dave sitting at the International House of Pancakes with a double stack, lots of coffee, listening to the game on a transistor radio right now.

top FOURTH
Well good, I was beginning to feel bad for Longoria.

To mention ear flappage just one more time, we have thus far noticed one Ray and one Phillie sporting flaps.

bottom SECOND
2-0 Philadelphia. The ear flaps post Billy linked is almost as cool as the earflaps themselves. It raises two especially good points: those earflap hats are MUCH nicer than the stocking hats, and you should not wear a hat with ear flaps unless you have both ear flaps down.

Will Kazmir remain in the game?

2-0 thanks to Victorino. I knew he was going to get a hit! You could tell by his body language and the way he watched the ball. Should've posted that. But sometimes you can tell. McGyver says: "It's easier for a hitter to hit when the pitcher gets wild...Victorino waiting for a fastball and hammers it."

Werth first on base; Utley hit by a pitch. Kazmir a little wild? dayf, Lucy says please just not the hockey one! :) I vote for '08 Goudey.

Ear flaps rule! Do they not?

Wow, the tops of the first inning went by so fast, we didn't even have the chance to post.

Welcome! This is an example of the wonderfully good-karma inducing cards we received from Heartbreaking Cards of Shattering Genius today. We'll do a post on these in the next day or two, but you can tell from this one that great things lie ahead. This opinion was just voiced in our household about half of Hall & Oates' rendition of The Star Spangled Banner: "it sounds a little bit like Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire."

Why did they only get half of Hall & Oates? Coudln't they get Christopher Cross? How about Michael McDonald?

night owl said...

I noted McCarver's "long arms" comment, too. He said "long arms are a good thing in baseball." Does that imply that long arms are a bad thing elsewhere? Why? So many questions? McCarver you're leaving me hanging!

Billy Suter said...

Oh noooooooo! It's Mr. Bill!

--David said...

We turned on the game just in time to catch the middle of the song, so we didn't even know who was singing... I feel ashamed that for all the 80's useless info I know, I did not recognize Hall without the Oates...

Kevin said...

Billy - Apparently Hall was sick. I thought Oates was great though...after Patti LaBelle's drawn-out, self-indulgent anthem last night, he was understated and pleasant.

dayf said...

Forget Oates without the Hall, that was Oates without the 'stache!

Billy Suter said...

I almost forgot! I I got the latest shipment of cards that you sent me, Patricia. I really liked what you sent. :-)

--David said...

Hey, I got my shipment of GREAT Tribe cards from Patricia today, too! THANKS a bunch!! I'll have a post up in a couple days (going out of town tues and wed)

Billy Suter said...

Those flavor dipped chicken sandwiches are good (especially the barbecue), but they're pretty messy. I've made quite a few of them.

WORLD SERIES SPECIAL!

You guys get to pick the pack for A Pack A Day tonight. Choose wisely:

08 Goudey
08 Opening Day
93 Pacific Nolan Ryan
08 Masterpieces hockey
08 Topps Updates & Highlights Wal-Mart pack

Lucy gets two votes.

Billy Suter said...

I'm going with '08 Goudey, dayf.

BTW, my code is "tonal". It's really rare that you find a code that's an actual word.

--David said...

93 Pacific Nolan Ryan.

Hey, how many batters hit by pitch for the series so far? I think I predicted 12 batters on cards-on-cards...

I think the ear flap deals a re cool, dc. when did they come up with those?

Billy Suter said...

http://www.uniwatchblog.com/

The fourth bullet point on this page talks about the hats with earflaps.

--David said...

perhaps blogger forgot the 'a' as in 'atonal:mccarver as oatesless:star-spangled banner'

Hmm, my code this time is laderr... There's an error in there...

Um, are we going to walk in a run again??

night owl said...

Pacific Nolan Ryan would be cool. ... My verification word is "begone" Ouch.

--David said...

Thanks for article lead, Billy! Great read!

Rays have a LONG way to go......

night owl said...

Geez, I expected Kazmir to be a lot better than this. Verification: gogoola

night owl said...

Oooh. No. 3 guy bunting. Not good.

dayf said...

2 votes for Nolan, 2 votes for Goudey, -2 votes for Hockey.

Someone break the tie!

DC said...

Gogoola should be a word, perhaps meaning "accurate." 'That post about '89 Donruss was thoroughly gogoola.'

night owl said...

If it helps, I'll go with Goudey. I was torn between Goudy and Pacific anyway

Billy Suter said...

I love that State Farm commercial, especially the end.

"Where you going?"
"Work."

dayf said...

Goudey it is!

Billy Suter said...

Concerning the ear flaps, you can always pay tribute to Jeffrey Leonard and wear your hat with one flap down.

night owl said...

Achiever Card Blog did a great post on ear flaps and Sin Soo Choo. I mentioned Mr. Leonard in my comment.

dayf said...

Post is up, I plugged the chat so maybe some people might wander in. I'll be the bouncer if any riff raff show up.

--David said...

Well, great, dayf, I guess I'll be bounced out of here before long...

Billy Suter said...

Do you guys think the weather is causing the Rays to play this badly?

--David said...

Rollins' flaps are keeping him hot in this game, for sure. Maddon always seems so "thrilled" to be talking to joe and tim... lol...

Pena comes up just short... Kinda summarizes the Rays in the series, huh?

"steem" - could we be getting some?? :-)

night owl said...

It's not the weather ... Whoa, Pena and Longoria are BACK.

dayf said...

After that box you sent me, you should be bounced! ;)

ZOMG! Pena and Longoria actually got hits!

--David said...

The weather would be an easy target. They just don't seem to have the enthusiasm the Phillies have. I wish the Rays would at least look like they want to be there...

Of course, cold, rainy is great for football - not so much baseball...

night owl said...

Uh, double play. Maybe it is the weather.

night owl said...

David, I got your box Saturday. Fantastic! I'm posting on it late tonight.

--David said...

LOL, dayf, yeah, I figured you would have me banned for the box alone! After you TP'd my 'house,' I just had to do something....

--David said...

The camera behind home plate looks like a jawa watching the game...

dayf said...

Note to everyone:

Do NOT play a trick on David! He exacts vengeance swiftly and devastatingly!

mmosley said...

Nice photo of the McCarver card. It looks like the post-it is on my screen. It didn't budge when I tried to remove it.

Flash said...

Cole Hamels gave them more to talk about. All you'll hear about for the rest of the night is "his hand, his hand" Or how pitchers use their hand. Other hand related topics.

night owl said...

I didn't get any tricks from David. I was expecting a box-load of Bella Sara cards.

Billy Suter said...

Wait a sec. I thought it was always sunny in Philadelphia.

night owl said...

Stop talking about SEAMS!

Flash said...

David, thanks for sending Kimaloo those Yankee cards. I had to sneak in there and pull a few Mattigly's I didn't have out of there. She liked the Jeter and Arod's.

Pictures of hands and how to hold pitches! I called it.

dayf said...

I have never heard the term 'cement mixer' used as a description of a pitch even once in my entire life before this World Series.

night owl said...

That's McCarver, right on top of the latest baseball slang.

night owl said...

Utley's just great.

dayf said...

Joe Buck is bored. I would sell my soul to the Robot Devil to have Joe Buck magically swap places with Vin Scully right now.

Completely off topic, the anti-Saxby Chambliss commercials are running almost non-stop here in Atlanta. There's even a baseball themed one where Saxby has a fake baseball card! (Saxby Chambliss is a candidate for senator for all you non-political junkies out there)

Billy Suter said...

When you guys get the iPhone with MLB commercial, what's the game you see? I see the Pirates at the Brewers.

dayf said...

Wow, that rain is really coming down... Fox must have told the Ump not to delay the game unless there is golf-ball size hail.

dayf said...

Yeah, Ryan Braun gland slam on the iPhone here too.

AlbuqwirkE said...

dayf, you need to contact the Saxby Chambliss people and find out if you can get one of those fake cards for your collection.

word verification = "butful" - which I presume is slang for "beautiful"

--David said...

You are all welcome for your cards! Don't worry, if you got tricked, you will be treated... some day.. without warning... I have to admit, dayf got one of the harshest tricks... Well, I guess that depends on how you look at it... LOL

I smell rain delay...

Billy Suter said...

I'd rather have hand talk and mud talk than pillow talk.

Looks like the umps are just calling strikes so that the game can end soon.

--David said...

My son just said, "The team youre rooting for sucks." He's trying to convince his mother that he should stay up to watch the game. He's losing. LOL

night owl said...

I'm making a vow right now: I will not buy anything from DirectTV and I will never stay in a Holiday Inn Express ... your brainwashing tactics will not work!

Flash said...

TV is just bad tonight. My only bright spot was spotting a box 1990 Donruss on the top of Jerry Seinfeld's fridge in an episode of Seinfeld earlier tonight.

dayf said...

No, the baseball card ad is from an Anti-Chambliss 527 group. Saxby strikes out after giving all our tax money to corporate interests. I do want the card though!

If the umps wanted to call strikes there were just two good ones by Kazmir they didn't call...

dayf said...

Shane Victorino needs to do push-ups like Willie Mays Hayes after all of the pop ups he hit this series.

Flash said...

Why didn't he call the infield fly? I thought that was a rule rather something at the ump's discretion.

Billy Suter said...

Oh, great. Now they're talking about the infield fly rule.

--David said...

Oh, man, I loved TOP CAT when I was a kid!! I don't remember all the names though... Officer Dibble.. LOL

dayf said...

You're the Griswolds?

Your husband better not be jumping in a pool with Christie Brinkley!

--David said...

Well, flash, they just gave your answer - bad weather cauing the feet to move around too much...

night owl said...

No Griswold references!!! You might set off that commercial again!

--David said...

This could be an awful way to end the series, if they call the game due to rain....

Flash said...

Very anti-climactic, not that the series has been action packed. I don't know, I just haven't been too interested in this series. I was expecting a bit more.

dayf said...

Tie Game!

Pena lives!

--David said...

Game is tied, they should call it now...

Flash said...

And to mess things up even further...tie game. Hydroplaned home.

night owl said...

You can hear the disgust for baseball and baseball fans in Joe Buck's voice. Such disdain: "I don't know how these fans can make so much noise when it's so wet."

Billy Suter said...

I made a safe call and almost knocked one of my guitars off its stand.

AlbuqwirkE said...

Of course if they would call this game, the Phillies win 2-1

--David said...

I agree, N.O., I mean how could Fox possibly have snagged these two boneheads for the series? Geez.

Tarp on the field... suspended game possibility... this could be interesting... well, no, not really...

AlbuqwirkE said...

Nevermind... thank goodness they are explaining the rules as they are going.

dayf said...

So is it a rain delay or are they packing it in and finishing the game tomorrow? I had to abandon the TV and get online for work and I am sadly missing the joyful banter of tweedledum and tweedledee.

capewood said...

That was excruciating. The umpires should have stopped this mess several innings ago. They knew when the game started that the rain wasn't going to stop for many hours.

AlbuqwirkE said...

Rain delay... so I turned the tv to BRAVO to watch National Lampoon's Vacation because it reminds me of the World Series.

Dave said...

Haha, no I wasn't at IHOP but your comment made me kinda hungry, Patricia. I was sadly watching the game from my couch feeling too uninspired to come here and comment. What awful conditions for a baseball game. Temperature under 40 degrees with drizzling rain ... and a team from FLORIDA has to play in that! Awful umpiring too. I don't think I've ever seen such bad ball/strike calls in any series ever.

They really should have stopped this game a while before they did, but it worked out nicely that the Rays tied it up first. It would be appropriate for their "against all odds" season if they come back and win after this. I doubt that they'll be able to play again tonight, and they say that the weather will be even worse in Philly tomorrow. They might as well just finish the game down in sunny St. Pete!

--David said...

They could postpone it until the Thanksgiving Day parade... :-)

codeword - foutoot... lol
