Strokes of Genius: the name fits.

The Upper Deck Strokes of Genius autographed baseball card is one of the most pleasing designs we've come across. Once Mario described the cards as "elegant" and that's what we like. Understated and classic...even the texture of the card, which resembles a heavy-stock vellum, works well. Best of all, no sticker autographs, only on-card. As usual, we are out of synch with reality, because Strokes of Genius cards are not that highly valued. You can pick them up on eBay for reasonable prices. The black frame works well, as does the vaguely distressed lettering. The player depictions are spot on. Here are a few:
And the one we own:

The main "throwback" in these Strokes of Genius cards: doing something simply and doing it well. When a company gets it right, we remember why we enjoy collecting these cardboard rectangles in the first place.

If only Upper Deck would realize the popularity or absolute greatness of some of these things, you know? I don't think we'll see another Masterpieces, just as we won't see another Diamond Kings from Donruss. It's a shame... Masterpieces could have been UD's A&G if they wanted.

I'm not much of a Masterpieces guy, but these are easily the best part of Masterpieces, and probably the best of any of the autograph inserts issued in any set last year.

those are some awesome cards! Masterpieces is a set I never appreciated, but with the crap coming out now, I wish masterpieces was back!

These are some of the nicer inserts that I've seen in recent years, but the player selection isn't really the best. No matter how nice the card is, most people won't get excited about Daniel Cabrera or Tom Gorzelanny.

They're such nice cards that it almost doesn't matter who's on them.

Bill Skowron $6.25/2.50 shipping
Daniel Cabrera 3.34/2.75
Nick Swisher 4.29/2.49

Moose for under ten bucks?? Thats... that's just wrong.

I got moose in one of my breaks. I would never sell it for that. I think some of the autos will be good long term because people will realize how difficult they are to pull.

The checklist sucked. I would have rather had mid range stars and a bunch of autos from a bunch of 70's and 80's guys. Dan Gladden, Jody Davis, Leon Durham, Willie McGee, The straw, Gooden, Julio Franco, Jesse Orosco anyone? Hell Yeah.
